As October arrived, our School Age 2 friends came together for a pumpkin carving experience filled with creativity, teamwork and excitement. We divided the children into three groups and invited each team to choose a name before beginning their activity. The teams proudly named themselves the Canadian Blue Jays, Rising Hawks, and Winners. Each group received a pumpkin to work on together, creating an opportunity for every child to share ideas, take turns and contribute to a shared goal.
As the activity began, the children eagerly took on different roles, from holding the pumpkins and scooping out the insides to suggesting designs and helping with the carving. It was wonderful to see them encouraging one another, especially when friends needed a little extra support. Samrith showed care for his teammates when he reminded them, “Be careful. I care about safety more than the pumpkin.” He also encouraged Theodore by saying, “Good job, Theodore. You did it yourself.” Meanwhile, Olivia motivated her group by saying, “I think we are doing a great job, guys.” These moments reflected the children's growing confidence, communication and ability to work together while respecting each other's ideas.
Throughout the experience, the children continued to exchange suggestions and make decisions as a team. When discussing the pumpkin's mouth, Samrith reminded his friends, “We have to think about the mouth, not just do it,” showing how the children carefully considered their ideas before taking the next step. Olivia's idea of drawing on the pumpkin with a Sharpie before carving also inspired others to try the same approach. Beyond their own groups, the children appreciated one another's efforts, with Praise admiring another team's pumpkin and saying, “It's cute.” Once all three pumpkins were complete, the children happily compared their creations and celebrated the different results. They also worked together to clean up, bringing the experience to a positive close.
Through this shared experience, the children explored creativity, problem-solving, communication, cooperation and safe participation. Moving forward, we will continue to offer collaborative experiences that encourage children to share responsibilities, listen to different perspectives, support their peers and work towards common goals. By building on these moments of teamwork, we hope to strengthen their confidence, independence and sense of belonging within our classroom community.
