As the school year slowly begins to come to an end, the children in our School Age 1 program have continued to strengthen their friendships and connections through a variety of shared experiences and group activities. Over the past months, we have noticed how much the children have grown not only in confidence and independence, but also in their ability to work together, communicate with one another, and create a strong sense of belonging within the classroom community. Whether indoors or outdoors, the children naturally gravitate towards activities that allow them to collaborate, laugh, and spend meaningful time together.
Many of our friends have recently shown a growing interest in taking on imaginative leadership roles during play experiences. One day, Praise invited her friends to gather on the carpet as she confidently held a storybook and began reading aloud to the group, taking on the role of a teacher. The children listened closely, observed the pictures, and remained engaged throughout the story experience. At the end, Praise encouraged participation by asking questions about the story and giving each friend an opportunity to share their thoughts by raising their hands and taking turns speaking. It was wonderful to see the children supporting one another while demonstrating patience, listening skills, confidence, and respect for each other’s ideas. These moments continue to help create a positive classroom environment where children feel comfortable expressing themselves and participating as part of a group.
Outdoor play also provided many opportunities for teamwork and cooperation. During a group ball game, the children worked together in a circle, focusing on passing, catching, and encouraging one another throughout the activity. Laughter and excitement filled the playground as they communicated with peers and educators while participating together. Another favourite experience for the children recently has been having picnic-style snacks outdoors. On warmer days, many of the children excitedly ask if they can enjoy their snack outside together, and we try our best to provide those opportunities whenever possible. Sitting together outdoors, sharing conversations, and enjoying snack with friends has become a meaningful part of our daily routine and continues to strengthen the children’s sense of community and belonging within the group.
Inside the classroom, children also explored cooperative play through a variety of group games such as Jenga, Uno, Spot It, and different board games. While participating in these experiences, the children practiced patience, turn-taking, problem-solving, and teamwork. They encouraged one another, celebrated successes together, and worked through challenges as a group. These shared games continue to support the children in building positive social skills while also developing confidence in their interactions with peers.
As we move closer towards the end of the school year, we will continue to support opportunities that encourage collaboration, communication, and meaningful social connections among the children. By providing experiences that promote teamwork, leadership, and child-led interactions, we hope to further strengthen the children’s sense of belonging, confidence, and positive relationships within our classroom community.
