One morning, the toddlers at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Nicholas were filled with excitement upon hearing that they would be planting peas in the garden. Enthusiastically, they joined Educator Megha for this special gardening adventure.
Gathered in a small group around the planter box, the children were eager to participate. With curiosity and many questions, Noemie, Aariv, Nolan and Michelle watched closely as Megha demonstrated how to scoop small holes in the soil. Each child was given a chance to touch and feel the soil, with N and M joyfully exclaiming, “It’s soft!” Aariv and Nolan eagerly asked, “What’s next?”
Educator Megha then handed each child a pea seed to place into the prepared holes. The children examined the seeds closely and excitedly shared their observations, noting, “It’s like a little ball!” Giggles filled the air as they gently placed the seeds into the soil. Megha then carefully covered the seeds and patted the soil down.
“And now comes the fun part—watering the peas.” Megha announced. As she spoke, Nolan eagerly ran toward the water tap, ready to help. More children joined in, each carrying a small container. They worked diligently, using focus and hand-eye coordination to fill their containers and carry the water to the planter box without spilling.
As the children poured the water onto the soil, they observed how it was absorbed. Nolan and Noemi curiously asked, “Is it ready yet?” This prompted Educator Megha to explain how the pea plants would grow tall and, once the pods formed, the peas inside would be ready to eat. The children listened attentively as this discussion led to deeper exploration of plant growth, the passage of time, and what plants need to thrive—sunlight, water, soil, and plenty of gentle care and love.
What’s Next:
We are now regularly checking on our pea plants, and the children are keenly observing their growth with great interest and curiosity.
