Creating New Friendships

School-age 2

As the new school year begins, School-age 2 has welcomed some new faces and some familiar faces into our program. It is not always easy making friends or creating new connections with one another so to be able to bond with each other over the same toys you like paying with, or over the same sport you enjoy participating in, really increases emotional and mental well-being.

During these last few weeks, we have seen many different connections unfold and develop into something bigger. The children have shown more interest in playing with outdoor games where they show off their competitiveness and sportsmanship. James, Daniel S, and Jackson decided they wanted to play basketball using the big yellow bucket. They all were trying to see who can get the ball in, along with who’s ball came out the side with the highest number on it. “Nice shot!” said James as his peers scored.

Some other friends decided to play a game using a skipping rope. Two people held one end of the skipping rope and made a long line. “How about they are lasers and you can’t touch them?” Lauren suggested. They all took turns trying to jump over the jump rope but made it challenging each time. They started the rope off low on the ground and once they all were able to jump off, the two people holding the rope raised it up a little bit higher each time. “Wow that was a high jump!” Lila said. This enhances their social and emotional skills by improving their turn taking, sharing and compromising with friends. This also allows them to build their self-confidence and self-esteem by supporting and encouraging one another.

Friendships help children recognize and understand feelings and perspectives of others, fostering kindness and compassion.
