One morning earlier this month, the Preschool 2 class at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Brigid, was excited! Educator Natalie, had a special box and project for them.
“Today,” she said, “we are going to plant seeds but not any seeds. We are going to experiment with popcorn! Remember when we put them in a bag and placed them in the window to watch them grow, but nothing happened? Well one of my friends helped us and grew some in her office and sent them to us.” Natalie asked the group, “Do you think these popcorn kernels can grow into corn plants?” “Yes!” shouted some children, “No!” said others!
Natalie looked in the special box and each child also peaked to see what was in the box. It was full of supplies to garden! They went outside to the preschool garden, bringing all the tools for planting, such as mini shovels, rakes, and a watering can. Some children helped plant the seeds, some helped dig the holes for the seeds, and others assisted in watering them. They carefully worked together to ensure all the necessary steps were done to help their popcorn kernels grow.
Now let’s hope these popcorn kernels grow into corn plants!
Every day, the children checked the garden and observed if anything new changes occurred. They created some art and drew images of the kernel sprouting a little more. We had a discussion on all the things that the seeds will need to grow. “Soil” and “water” the children replied. “And sunlight, too!” added educator Emma.
The children were proud to take part in the experiment and help plant the popcorn kernels our friend gave us. They have learned that most things can grow and as well as our popcorn kernels sprouting when they have what they need.
We are continuing to observe and care for our garden and seeds. We hope that we were great gardeners and look forward to watching them grow!
