This month our educators did a workshop with Jill Bienenstock on gardening so they brought their new learning to our classroom! We talked about different vegetables and as a group, we decided which ones we wanted to plant. We only have so much space on our playground so we are taking advantage of our vertical space!
The toddlers helped to scoop the dirt into the various containers until they were almost full. Then educator Aly put some seeds into her hand and showed the toddlers how to pinch the seeds using their fine motor skills and spread them over the soil. Lastly, we then topped it off with a bit more soil. We repeated this process with all of our seeds; lettuce, rosemary, broccoli, and cauliflower.
To get our big garden box ready for us to plant in we scooped out the mulch and sand. We filled up wheel barrows and moved the top few layers of dirt to the trees around our playground before pouring a fresh bag of soil on top, now the box was ready for us to add our plants to. We even dug hole in our tire planters and planted loofah squash and pumpkins! Then shared the rest of the plants and seeds with our Toddler 2 and Infant friends to take part in our garden.
We have been watering our garden daily and patiently waiting for our plants to sprout. The toddlers were all so excited to see when green stared to poke through the soil. We can’t wait for our plants to grow big and tall so that we can give each of them a taste. Maybe we can do some baking or cooking with our vegetables and herbs!
