This morning outdoors, the children took part in a colourful sensory experiment using mica powder. We gathered around the tuff tray and invited the children to select their favourite colours. Ronan enthusiastically called out “Purple!”, while Holly signed and said “Blue,” showing their growing understanding of colours and confidence in communicating their choices. The children then helped combine vinegar and water, carefully pouring the liquids and strengthening their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
The children watched closely as the ingredients reacted together, creating lots of fizzing bubbles that spilled across the tuff tray. There were many opportunities for discussion as the children shared their observations and predictions about what might happen next. This exciting activity encouraged curiosity, early scientific exploration, and sensory engagement while also supporting communication, cooperation, and problem-solving skills. Why not recreate this simple experiment at home and explore the colourful reactions together?
