Throughout the month of May, children participated in a variety of experiences that celebrated culture, diversity, community, and connection to the land. Children explored drumming using xylophones, tin containers, steel buckets, plasti
c pails, wooden logs, and a drum set, investigating how different materials created unique sounds and vibrations. They observed one another's actions and incorporated new ideas into their play. For example, Anni placed gravel and wood chips on a drum surface and watched how they moved when the drum was struck, while Liv connected her family's cultural traditions to the experience by wearing the drum around her neck and walking as she played. The experiences also provided opportunities for children to express their identities and cultural knowledge.
Children also engaged in literacy experiences through the book Our Rainbow, which sparked discussions about colors, identity, and diversity. Together, we explored each color of the rainbow and engaged in rich conversations about the colors we observed in our environment. Children enthusiastically participated in a color-finding game, identifying colors around them and making meaningful connections. They noticed the green grass outdoors, the black chalkboard in our classroom, Prabh's brown skin, and Anni's red clothing. These discussions encouraged children to observe differences and similarities while developing language, vocabulary, and an appreciation for diversity. To extend their learning, children expressed their understanding creatively by painting rainbow colors on our mirror wall, transforming the space into a vibrant reflection of their ideas and discoveries.
As part of Indigenous cultural learning, children baked bannock. This experience invited children to explore the process of transforming simple ingredients into food. Toddlers eagerly participated in measuring, pouring, mixing, and stirring the batter, developing their sensory awareness and early mathematical thinking. Throughout the experience, children made connections to their own lives and families. We heard comments such as, "I made cookies at home too," demonstrating how children naturally connect new experiences with their prior knowledge and home experiences. Sharing food preparation together fostered a sense of community while honoring Indigenous cultural traditions.
Our connection to the land continued through our gardening experiences. Children participated in planting seeds and caring for our garden, developing an understanding of responsibility, patience, and stewardship. Together, we prepared the soil, planted seeds, watered the garden daily, removed weeds, and carefully observed the changes occurring over time. Children shared stories about gardens they care for with their families, the vegetables and flowers they grow at home, and the gardening experiences they enjoy with loved ones. Some families even contributed seeds from home, which children proudly planted in our garden. These shared experiences strengthened our relationships with families and highlighted the valuable knowledge children bring from their homes and communities.
Through gardening and food preparation, children strengthened their relationship with the land and gained an appreciation for the care, patience, and responsibility needed to nurture living things. Family participation further enriched the learning, strengthening the partnership between home and the classroom community.
Moving forward, we will continue to create opportunities for children to explore music and sound through open-ended investigations, encouraging them to test theories, compare materials, and represent their discoveries in different ways. We will invite families to share cultural music traditions, instruments, and celebrations to deepen children's understanding of diverse experiences.
Our gardening journey will continue as children observe changes in plant growth, harvest produce, and explore the role of plants in our environment. We will also build on children's interest in food preparation by incorporating additional cultural cooking experiences that reflect the diverse backgrounds of our classroom community. Through these ongoing experiences, we will continue to nurture children's sense of belonging, responsibility, inquiry, and connection to their families, communities, cultures, and the land.
