Lucas used the markers to make a portrait of a monster like a paint artist and he also added the same colours as the monster he was holding in his hand like an artist. Oakley proudly showed off a reindeer that she made from the cardboard tube, decorating with the googly eyes, ribbons and colourful craft pieces.  A third child painted a wooden stick with the paint colour, she was observing how the colours changed the look of the wood. Everybody worked in their own way showing the curiosity, imagination like making a monster and reindeer. This shows the children’s growing confidence in using different materials.  During a free play, we offered the children a collection of the bottle caps to explore creativity. It was wonderful to see how quickly their imaginations came to life. The children Chloe H and Chloe B began arranging the caps in the circular pattern and excitedly explained that they are making a solar system. They used the markers to draw on the caps, turning each one into a different planet with unique colours and designs. This shows that they are connecting the dots of their knowledge with their creativity.School Age 1 child standing holding a tube with google eyes, a pom pom nose, and ribbon around it - School Age child standing in the back

These moments showed how much the children are developing their skills like hand eye coordination, fine motor skills and ability to express their ideas. They were experimenting and trying new techniques while enjoying their freedom to create something that felt meaningful to them. They are also building the early problem-solving skills by deciding what materials to use, figuring out how they can make their ideas come to life. They showed the creativity not just in what they made, but in how they approached the activity. These emotions and moments show us how they communicate their thoughts, feelings and ideas in ways that feel natural and meaningful to them.

Moving forward, we are curious to see how the children’s creativity will continue to grow and what ideas they might explore next so that’s why we are trying to introduce new textures and tools and much more material like this so that they can experiment even more with building, decorating and designing. We will continue to create opportunities for them to work together on projects. In this way we can encourage team work, communication and the chance to learn from one another’s ideas. All in all, by giving them more opportunities and materials we can continue to support their imagination and growing sense of creativity.
