A Colourful Month of Learning

Preschool

This month the preschoolers have been very interested in colours. Whether it be wondering what each of their friends’ favourite colour is, or wondering what happens when you mix them, there has been lots of discourse surrounding this topic. Colours are such a great part of a child’s learning journey. They help them make sense of the world, encourage new vocabulary and create fun opportunities to explore and play together.

We sorted coloured paper donuts onto coloured straws, like a game of horseshoes. We also played a pom-pom sorting game, where children could pick up the pom-poms with tweezers and place them into different coloured cups. This ended up also being a dramatic play activity as well, as the children pretended to make soup and drinks for their new friends. One of our fan-favourite activities ended up being making slime. We made slime together as a group, mixing colours into the slime and watching as the colours blended into new ones, sparking lots of great conversation around the little experiment.

Learning about colours at this age has so many benefits. Sorting and matching activities help children practice problem-solving and early math skills. While mixing colours encourages creativity and curiosity. Talking about what they see and sharing their ideas builds vocabulary3 Preschool children sitting at the table with their slime colouring the slime with markers and strengthens language development, which are important steps toward literacy and reading readiness.

It has been so fun watching the children notice different colours around the classroom and outside in nature. They love to point out when educators or fellow preschoolers are wearing their favourite one, or mention that the leaves are changing from green to orange, yellow and red outside. Our next step is to teach about fall, and what happens when the trees all change colours with their leaves, and why. We look forward to all of the colour-filled discussions!
