It was a wonderful first summer at Oak Creek, enjoyed by everyone in the Preschool 1 room. The children participated in many different art activities throughout the summer which included, drawing pictures with their eyes closed, gluing various textured materials to paper and creating their own chalk paint to decorate the pavement. Each child was able to express their creativity through these experiences as well as enhance their senses and fine motor skills.
The children were also engaged in many outdoor activities as well. There were many water days, where the group got to cool off from the hot sun and use their gross motor skills to run, hop and skip through the water. This time was also used to promote self-help skills while dressing and undressing into and out of their bathing suits, as well as demonstrating responsibility and respect while using the various materials provided to them. The children also used their knowledge of colours one morning and went on a scavenger hunt, looking all around the playground for specific colours, marking off each item they found. Along with the hot, sunny days came rainy days. The children were able to use this indoor time to experiment with some new materials and experiences. They used their fine motor skills and creative abilities to build structures out of Lego and their logical thinking and turn taking skills while playing board games.
All of these activities had all of the children engaged in some way and promoted a sense of belonging, allowing everyone to participate in their own way.
