Over the past few weeks, we have been busy learning through free play and exploration. On November 11th, Remembrance Day, we took time to honor the fallen, Canada’s Veterans, and currently serving military and police members for their courage, service, and sacrifice both at home and around the world as well as their families and loved ones.
As a group, we discussed the importance of this day and shared our knowledge and understanding with one another. Elena shared, “We do this to keep those soldiers alive by remembering them every day.” Robynne added, “Each poppy resembles a soldier who died in the war.” Emilia reflected, “We take the moment of silence to honor those people who died for us.”
Children were provided with art materials to create their own poppies while talking together about the meaning of Remembrance Day. They made wonderful poppies, which we combined to create a group wreath adorned with a black ribbon. We stood side by side and observed two minutes of silence to show our respect on this day.
Remembrance Day offers an important opportunity to talk with children about honoring Canada’s history and the generations who came before us. As educators, we are honored to support children in learning about and respecting this history.
Lest we forget.
