Program Name: Toddler 1

During the past 2 months of summer, the toddlers have taken an interest in exploring outdoors and wildlife. We have a small pond and trail in the community close to our centre for adventure walks and exploration. The toddlers have been practicing the buddy system and holding hands while walking to the trail. We have been able to find lots of different wildlife while exploring the trail and pond. When we get to the pond the children often start looking for “froggies” on the lily pads. We have also found ducks, small fish, and different insects such as caterpillars, spiders, and dragonflies.

To expand the children’s interest on wildlife, we gave them buckets and nets. They enjoyed scooping the pond water to inspect what was inside. Rian found moss in his bucket of water and took it out to inspect it. “What is this Chloe?”, Chloe responded with some open-ended questions such as, “What do you think it may be?”, “How does it feel in your hands?”. After exploring the moss, we put it back into the pond.

Outdoor play is good for children’s physical health, development and their well being. It promotes their gross motor skills and gives children the chance to explore the natural environment and have adventures. They have the opportunity to play games, test their physical limits, express themselves and build their self-confidence.
