Playdough Poppy Flower

Print
Program Name: Toddler 1

In the month of November; Toddler 1 engaged in a meaningful creative experience as we reflected on Remembrance Day. The children were invited to explore red playdough, loose parts, and simple tools to create their own poppy flowers. This activity introduced the children to an important symbol while giving them the freedom to explore materials in their own way.

The toddlers showed excitement as they pressed, rolled, and flattened the bright red playdough using rolling pins and their hands. Some children experimented by shaping the playdough into circles, while others added black pom-poms and green sticks to represent the center and stem of the poppy. This hands-on play encouraged them to practice their fine-motor skills, including pressing, squeezing, poking, and picking up small materials.

Throughout the experience, the children also demonstrated problem-solving as they figured out how to attach pieces together or flatten the dough to match the poppy picture shown by the educators. They communicated with each other, shared tools, and observed how their friends created their flowers—supporting early social skills like cooperation and turn-taking.
This sensory and creative activity provided an opportunity for the toddlers to connect with a meaningful event through age-appropriate exploration. We are proud of how engaged and focused they were as they created their own poppy flowers for Remembrance Day.

We look forward to offering more hands-on learning experiences as the children continue to explore, create, and grow together.
