Earth Day Sun Catchers

  • Program Name: School-age 1

In our after-school program, the children enthusiastically engaged in a sun catcher-making activity that encouraged creativity, self-expression, and fine motor development. The children explored different colours, designs, and materials to create unique pieces of artwork while strengthening their hand-eye coordination and decision-making skills.

In the month of April, the children celebrated Earth Day by creating Earth-themed sun catchers. They were provided with clear contact paper, tissue paper pieces, scissors, and markers to support their creative exploration. The children experimented with different designs, shapes, and patterns while carefully constructing their own unique sun catchers. Many of the children chose to represent our planet using blue and green materials, sparking conversations about the Earth, nature, and the importance of caring for our environment.

The activity began with a group discussion about sunlight, colours and how sun catchers work by allowing light to shine through colorful materials. This engaging activity encouraged creativity while also teaching the importance of caring for the environment. The children worked together while discussing different ways we can help protect the Earth, such as recycling, reducing waste, reusing materials, and keeping nature clean. They also talked about the importance of caring for trees, animals, and natural spaces within our community. Through meaningful conversations and collaborative learning, the children demonstrated environmental awareness, teamwork, and a growing understanding of how their actions can positively impact the world around them.

During this process, the children strengthened their fine motor skills by cutting tissue paper, peeling and sticking materials, and carefully arranging pieces with precision. This activity provided a fun and creative way for the children to explore light, colour, and design while continuing to build important developmental skills.

The educators supported the learning experience by asking open-ended questions to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and conversation. The children also practiced hand-eye coordination, concentration, and patience while completing their projects. Problem-solving skills were evident as the children adjusted their designs, experimented with layering colours, and discovered how different patterns and materials changed the final appearance of their sun catchers.

Once completed, the sun catchers were displayed on the classroom windows. The children were excited to observe how the sunlight passed through their designs, creating beautiful reflections and colourful shadows around the room. They shared observations with one another, noticing how darker colours blocked more light while lighter colours allowed more brightness to shine through.

Throughout the activity, the children demonstrated focus, patience, and collaboration by helping one another and sharing materials. They eagerly showed their finished creations to peers and educators with pride and excitement. This meaningful hands-on experience helped the children connect with Earth Day in a fun, creative, and educational way while encouraging exploration of art, science, and nature.
