Celebrating Vaisakhi with School Age Children

  • Program Name: School-age 2

The school age 2 children participated in a meaningful cultural experience as we celebrated Vaisakhi, an important Indian festival. The educators first introduced the children to what Vaisakhi is and why it is celebrated. We explained that Vaisakhi is a harvest festival celebrated by many people in India, especially in the Punjabi community. We also talked about how families celebrate with music, dancing, special foods, prayers, and gatherings. They seem very interested in learning about another culture and asked many thoughtful questions during our discussion. Charlotte asked, “Do people wear colourful clothes for Vaisakhi?”. Elena asked, “Do children dance at the festival?” After our discussion, the children worked together to create a “Happy Vaisakhi” poster using chart paper, bubble wrap and yellow paint. The children used bubble wrap painting to make bright yellow corn shapes, representing harvest and farming connected to Vaisakhi celebrations.

Throughout the activity, the children showed creativity, teamwork, and strong communication skills. They shared materials, helped one another, and expressed pride in their artwork. The sensory experience of painting with bubble wrap encouraged exploration and fine motor development. This activity also supported the children’s understanding of diversity, inclusion, and respect for different cultures and traditions

At the end of the activity, the children proudly displayed their finished “Happy Vaisakhi” poster and celebrated their work together as a group.
