One day in our Infant Room, the children started to gathered around the light table with curiosity and excitement as their educators began setting up a new activity. Paper cards with a "secret hidden" image behind them were arranged around the table. The educator placed a card onto the table and the light started to shine through the translucent paper illuminating the previously hidden image. Our infants were surprised and delighted by the discovery and they began putting the different cards onto the table to see what image would be revealed next. Smiles and laughter filled the room as each child explored the glowing images, pointing to various animals and mimicking the various sounds they made.
This activity supports curiosity, observation, cause and effect exploration and sustained attention as well as fine motor skills by picking up and placing the images down. These experiences also support early social and language development as the infants proudly shared their discoveries with their peers and educators.
