To celebrate National Scavenger Hunt Day, the children participated in a fun scavenger hunt activity around the classroom. Lately, the children have been very interested in finding hidden objects and exploring different areas of the room and playground, so this activity was planned to encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and active play. The children were divided into two groups, and each group was given a paper with six pictures of classroom items they needed to find. After listening to the instructions, the children excitedly began searching around the classroom.
The children were very familiar with the kitty cat stuffy, so many of them immediately ran toward the book area with the stuffy’s first. Some children quickly pointed toward the dramatic play kitchen because they were sure the pizza slices would be there. Birdie became very excited when she found the avocado toy. She jumped happily and said, “Felix, I found the avocado!” Fox and Lana were confident they knew where the doll would be hidden and searched for it together in the doll house.
While searching for the remaining items, many of the children became confused about where the red dust bin could be. Fox stopped for a moment, thought carefully, and decided to check behind the door. Everyone became excited when he successfully found it there. After all the pictures on the paper were completed, the children were told there was a mystery toy hidden somewhere in the classroom that they would need to find it together.
The children immediately started looking around the room, checking shelves, corners, and different learning areas. At first, they could not find the mystery toy. Sadie then asked, “What kind of toy is it?” then I gave a clue that it was a puzzle. After hearing the clue, Sadie looked toward the puzzle shelf and noticed an unfamiliar puzzle there. She picked it up and lifted it high while the children excitedly shouted, “We found it! We found it!” After celebrating together, the children helped place all the toys back where they belonged so the second group could have a turn. Colin and Fox also worked together to choose a new hiding place for the mystery puzzle.
When the second group began, the children were told there was a mystery motorcycle hidden somewhere in the classroom. Benjamin and Rose quickly asked, “Felix, where this mystery motorcycle was?” Before searching for the mystery toy, the children first worked together to find all the objects shown on their paper. Benjamin took on the leadership role during the activity and excitedly called out, “Guys, we need to win, I got the avocado” which motivated the group to continue searching together for the other items.
After completing the picture hunt, the children began looking for the mystery toy. Benjamin asked, “Felix, can you say if it is cold or hot?” showing he understood how the clue games works. A clue was given by saying the toy was somewhere near the Kitchen or Book center. The children carefully searched around the dramatic play kitchen and reading area. Eventually, Rose found the hidden toy, but she was surprised because she expected to find a motorcycle. Instead, the mystery toy had been replaced with an excavator. The surprise made the children laugh and added even more excitement to the activity.
Throughout the scavenger hunt, the children used observation, memory, and problem-solving skills while exploring the classroom environment. They also fostered communication and teamwork skills by helping one another, sharing ideas, and celebrating each other’s discoveries. The activity encouraged physical movement as the children walked, bent, reached, and explored different areas of the classroom.
