Remembrance Day!

Preschool 2

This month in Preschool 2 at RisingOaks Early Learning | John Sweeney our preschool class explored Remembrance Day in a way that was gentle, simple, and full of meaning for the children. We started off by reading a charming picture book about poppy flowers. The children immediately noticed the bright red petals and asked sweet questions about why people wear poppies in November. We shared stories about how poppies help us remember and say thank you to those who help keep everyone safe.

During story time, each child happily shared their thoughts. Austeja said, “The poppy means peace,” and Rose said, “We wear it to say thank you.” These kind comments showed how they are beginning to understand the important idea in a way that feels just right for them.

After the story, the children happily made their own poppy art using coffee filters, red paint, and brushes. They watched the colours spread and talked about what they saw. One child giggled, “Mine is turning so red,” as they watched their colour blend. They were so proud of their beautiful little flowers.

Later, we enjoyed a fun playdough activity. The children used red playdough to shape petals and added black beads for the centres of their poppies. This activity helped strengthen their tiny fingers while they explored textures and shapes. One proudly said, “Look! I made a tiny poppy,” and another cheered, “My poppy has lots of beads!”

Throughout the week, the children practised being creative, using their fine motor skills, and exploring colours. They also learned a simple but meaningful idea: that Remembrance Day is about remembering and honouring people who take care of others.

The classroom was filled with wonderful red flowers made by the children, and they loved sharing their artwork with friends and teachers. Their natural curiosity, gentle questions, and creative efforts helped them connect to Remembrance Day in a way that’s perfect for preschoolers.child paintingchild playing with pink playdoughdisplay board of poppy created by the childreneducator showing a book to children
