This month, we spent time learning about Indigenous History Month. We talked about who Indigenous Peoples are and learned that we live on land that has been cared for by Indigenous communities for generations. The children showed lots of curiosity during our discussions and were interested in learning about Indigenous cultures, traditions, and ways of life.
To begin our learning, we created a Kindness Tree. We asked the children, "What are some kind things we can do for others?" They shared ideas such as helping a friend, using kind words, sharing toys, and offering support to others. Each idea was added to our tree as a leaf, creating a classroom reminder of how we can show kindness every day.
We also explored stories and teachings about caring for one another, respecting the land, and building strong communities. Through discussions, books, and creative activities, the children reflected on ways they can show respect, kindness, and responsibility in their everyday lives.
Another activity we explored focused on respectful listening and sharing. We discussed the importance of taking turns speaking, listening carefully to others, and valuing different perspectives. The children practiced these skills during group discussions, waiting patiently for their turn and listening thoughtfully while their friends shared their ideas.
The children enjoyed taking part in these activities and discussions throughout the month. It was wonderful to hear their ideas, questions, and connections as we learned together and deepened our understanding of Indigenous Peoples and their contributions, both past and pr
esent.
