Building Belonging Together

School-age 1

September has been an exciting month in our School Age 1 After School Program at RisingOaks Early Learning | John Sweeney as we welcomed back our SK children and introduced our newest JK friends to the group. With both returning and new families joining us, we have been focusing on building relationships, learning new routines, and creating a sense of belonging for everyone.

We recognize that children thrive when they are engaged, valued, and have a voice in their learning environment. To support this, we held a group discussion with the children about what toys, games, and materials they would like to see in our room. Their ideas ranged from creative building sets to imaginative play props, gross motor materials just as hula hoops, basketballs, skipping ropes and board games. This conversation encouraged collaboration, problem-solving, and gave children ownership of the program. By actively listening to their suggestions, we are reinforcing that this is their space, one where their interests and voices guide the experiences we create together.

Our returning SK children have stepped into leadership roles, supporting their new JK peers in learning the daily routines, such as where to put belongings, how to transition between activities, and how to use the materials responsibly. This peer mentoring builds confidence, responsibility, and empathy, and contributes to a supportive community where everyone feels capable and included.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming Bibi, our new educator, into the program. The children were quick to share their ideas and show her around, and they have enjoyed her fresh perspective and creativity. Together with Bibi, we are continuing to shape a safe, engaging, and inclusive program.

As the year unfolds, we look forward to watching friendships deepen, children’s independence grow, and new learning opportunities emerge from the voices and interests of the group. At RisingOaks, every child is not only part of the program but also a co-creator of the learning that happens within it.
