Shape Explorers: Discover, Play and Build

Preschool 1

Our Preschool 1 class has been deeply engaged in exploring the world of shapes. Whether big or small, every shape sparks excitement and curiosity. The children eagerly gathered around the table to work on shape puzzles, thoughtfully deciding which pieces fit where. They also used a variety of flower sizes to create a beautiful garden for their educators, showing both creativity and care. With colourful, differently shaped buttons, they crafted stunning bracelets and jewelry, proudly showing off their creations. Giggles filled the room as they matched patterned mats using tangrams, discovering how shapes can connect and fit together in fun and unexpected ways. Their enthusiasm for learning through play has truly blossomed. These fun and creative experiences support early math and fine motor skills, as they learned how shapes fit together through puzzles, tangrams and creative crafts. The activities also encouraged collaboration, self-expression, and problem-solving, showing how learning through play fosters both cognitive and social growth. To build on their interest in shapes, I wonder how we can introduce more complex shape activities such as 3D shape building and pattern sequencing. What would the preschoolers do when incorporating stories and songs about shapes to deepen their understanding? It would be interesting to use our outdoor elements to create a shape hunt to encourage collaboration and real-world connections.
