A gems searching game

School-age 2

Children engaged in an act of kindness through a gem searching activity. The children created a new method into the game to extend their play. An educator explained two parts of rules to them. Part one: each child will search for a gem that the educator set on the floor with his/her name on it. Once found, all children will hand them back to the educator to continue to part two. Part two: the educator will put the same set of the gems back on the floor. The children will search for the first gem that they can find, read the name on that gem and hand it to the peer’s name on that gem and that peer can keep it. When the game started, the children followed the rules and handed the gems to the educator. “It’s not that hard to find” some children talked to each other. It took the children a while to search for their names before returning it to the educator. When starting part two, the children were very quick to hand the gems to peers “here you go, it’s your name” and at the end of the game all children can keep their gem. The educator asked the children “Which part was easier to find the gems?” “Part two was easier and faster” replied the children. “It was nice to see that instead of spending a longer time searching for your own gem, your peers helped look for your name and gave it to you and nicely, right?” The children nodded and said “Yes!”. After the activity finished, some children came to the educator and said that they didn’t like the gem they owned. The educator questioned “What are your ideas so you can find one you may like?” The children looked at each other and said “Can we trade them?” “Yes!!!” The children agreed with excitement and started trading their gems to each other. This experience enhances the children’s literacy through searching for their own name and peers’ names, also promotes communication skills, cognitive skills, encourages and practices kindness.
