Making Connections Through Play

Program Name: School-age

The beginning of September brought many firsts to our centre and program. As each day passed, more children joined us, and the program is continuing to grow. It hasn't taken long for the children to create connections amongst themselves and with educator Mona. The children are growing more comfortable and they are advocating for themselves as they voice their wants and needs.

The children have been observed taking part in dramatic play. It is quite often that Aria plays the mother in a family game with Adain playing as the father, and Maya, Robynne and Emilia playing the babies. This "family play" often starts outdoors and then transitions into the kitchen once the group goes inside. There are many smiles and much laughter shared amongst the group during this play. As the dramatic play goes on it is quite evident that the children are fostering their connections with each other.

Playing Frisbee and playing catch has played a role in building connections as well. Samarth, Daksh, Jay, Lucas, Parker, Ryan and Caleb are often seeing playing a game in small groups. Playing these types of games foster problem-solving skills, and gives and opportunity for the children to create their own games and rules. This strengthens communication skills as the children articulate their thoughts and ideas.

As the children continue to build relationships, the Educators are excited to see where their interests take them In the near future.
