Elmer welcomes our new Preschool 2 Friends!

Program Name: Preschool 2

This September, Preschool 2 welcomed lots of new faces into our classroom! As toddlers became preschoolers, a specific book became a permanent part of our everyday story rotation - Elmer the Patchwork Elephant.

Preschoolers old and new - love this sweet story of a colourful elephant with a unique patchwork that felt out of place compared to his other “normal” coloured elephants. Elmer, frustrated with feeling different, goes on a journey through the jungle to paint himself elephant grey. His herd become so unhappy without the colourful jokester that Elmer surprises them and reveals his “true colours” when a rain cloud washes away his grey paint. The herd is delighted - and spooked - to have their kind, tenacious and vibrant friend back.

To build upon this beautiful story of inclusivity, we offered a “Build Your Own Elmer” station. Each child meticulously created a patchwork elephant using paint, blocks, glue, googly eyes, and paper. Through the exploration of these materials, a beautiful display of individuality and creative expression was made in our hallway! As our very own "Elmer's Day” adorned our wall, it has become an invitation for discussion and admiration among our families and others in the centre.

We are so happy this story of friendship was able to bring new friends together and introduce topics of acceptance and diversity into our classroom this month. The Preschool 2 educators are so excited to see where this love of books can take us next!
