This month in Preschool 1, the children have been exploring the topic of spring and discussing the many changes that come with the season. Our conversations began through our exploration of nature and natural events, including volcanoes, tornadoes, and twisters, which naturally led us into discussions about spring weather and seasonal changes.
Simone introduced the book I See Spring, which sparked meaningful conversations about the signs of spring. During our discussion, Natalie excitedly shared, “Rain!” while other children contributed ideas such as flowers, rainbows, bunnies, coats, and boots. Together, the group reflected on how spring weather changes and why we wear rain gear such as raincoats and boots when it rains.
Robbie shared his personal connection to the topic by explaining that thunderstorms and lightning happen when he is at home, helping the group connect their learning to real-life experiences. Through these discussions, the children demonstrated their growing understanding of seasonal weather, nature, and environmental changes.
As our conversations about spring continued, we also began preparing Mother’s Day gifts. Last year, our classroom sunflowers produced many seeds, and this year the children used those saved seeds to plant thoughtful gifts for their mothers. Each child selected a pot colour they thought their mom would like best. They then worked together with Tirhas to add soil and carefully plant the seeds into their pots.
In addition, the children helped plant herbs and flowers in the classroom. This experience generated great excitement, as the children were able to make connections between the stories we have been reading about spring and their hands-on gardening experiences. Our learning journey has naturally evolved from exploring nature and natural disasters to understanding seasonal changes and now engaging in gardening experiences.
The children are enthusiastic and eager to continue participating in gardening activities as we learn and grow together this spring season.
