As fall approaches, children begin to see signs of fall in the air. As Preschool 2 at RisingOaks Early Learning, | John Sweeney new class of 2025, we went on our first walk around the neighbourhood park. Before we went on our walk we learned about safety, and what we can do as a group to stay safe while walking together. We discussed how we use the buddy system and the children were paired up with a buddy for our walk.
As we began our walk around the park, the children pointed to objects that caught their attention. Many children were intrigued with the trees, as some of the tree leaves were changing colour from green to orange and red. One of the children grabbed a coloured leaf and said, “this leaf is orange-red just like the flowers at my home”. A few of the other children were curious about the leave and further explored it by feeling its texture.
As we continued along with our fall journey we stopped along this little forest, the children entered the area and saw many different types of trees, different flowers, and many pine-cones. The children were very excited to show the educators their treasures of nature. The items we collected will be added to our collection for a fall activity to expand on our learning and some to bring home. We enjoyed the adventure in the forest so much, the children loved playing with friends in nature, and some friends showed their strength by climbing trees and holding onto branches with the educators help, which is a great way to foster their gross motor development.
The best part of our first walk is exploring all of nature, we observed squirrels collecting food for the winter, leaves changing colours and falling off the trees and noticed how the weather was getting cooler. The children demonstrated an interest in the season of fall and the changes that come along with it. With frequent walks as a group, the Preschoolers will come to enjoy each season as it approaches and learn about what happens in each season. We look forward to continuing to expand on this interest.
