During the month of October, the children in Toddler 2 engaged in multiple tuff tray science experiments!
The first experience the toddlers engaged in was a colour mixing science experiment with the use of water and food colouring!
In small groups, the children explored the tuff tray that was equipped with the three primary colours of water in numerous paint pots. There were also five empty ice cube trays, multiple clear cups and eye droppers.
The children were then encouraged to identify the colours of water that they had and were invited to mix the colours together to see if they could make another colour. As a group we were able to create the three secondary colours; purple, orange and green.
The toddlers also discovered that when you mix all of the colours together you can make brown! What a fun way to promote the use of our colour recognition skills!
The second experience the toddlers engaged in was a group science experiment as they explored coloured vinegar and baking soda! The children were provided with baking soda sprinkled across the tuff tray along with eye droppers and several cups of coloured vinegar. The children were then invited to see what would happen when the two materials were combined together.
To the children’s amazement, when put together, the two substances created a chemical reaction as they fizzed and bubbled up.
This was a very exciting discovery as the children could conduct this experiment over and over again. The toddlers watched attentively and observed carefully as they listened to the fizzing sounds that they had created. Many also identified the colours that they saw and how they had created “bubbles”.
