This month, school age 3 children participated in a meaningful activity called “The Reconciliation Time Capsule; A Promise for Tomorrow” in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Through thoughtful discussions, the children explored the importance of remembering, learning, listening, and taking action. They reflected on why every child matters and how we can help create a community where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.
As part of the activity, each child created three reflection cards: What I Learned, What I Will Remember, and My Promise for Tomorrow. The children shared their learning, reflected on the importance of reconciliation, and identified small actions they could take in their everyday lives, such as showing kindness, including others, respecting different experiences, and continuing to learn about Indigenous peoples and their histories.
The children then placed their reflection cards into a classroom Reconciliation Time Capsule, which they decorated with meaningful words such as Respect, Listen, Learn, Include, and Care. Together, we also created an “Our Promises for Tomorrow” display to celebrate their commitments and remind us that reconciliation is an ongoing journey that requires continued learning, understanding, and action.
At the end of the school year, we look forward to reopening our time capsule and revisiting the children's reflections to see how their learning and commitments have grown. We are proud of the children's thoughtful participation and creativity throughout this experience. We encourage families to continue these important conversations at home by discussing the meaning of respect, belonging, and reconciliation, and how small, everyday actions can help build a more caring and inclusive community.
