Pumpkin Exploration through washing

  • Program Name: Toddler 1

Our pumpkin journey began when the toddlers discovered a collection of little pumpkins on the shelf at the front of the classroom. They were immediately excited to explore them, carrying the pumpkins around and attempting to fit them into recycled yogurt containers during the morning.

As they investigated, the toddlers began to notice how dirty the pumpkins were, pointing out the piles of dirt and mud on the largest pumpkin. Seeing their curiosity, educators decided to extend their interest the following day by inviting the children to give their pumpkins a bath!

We filled our large sensory bin with soapy water, cups, sponges, and, of course, some spooky fall-themed treasures. The toddlers eagerly got to work scrubbing away the dirt and discovering what was hidden along the way. They were especially excited whenever they found a little gem, carefully collecting their treasures and lining them up along the shelf of the water table. Among their discoveries were ghosts, spiders, pumpkins, leaves, and even eyeballs!

This hands-on experience supported the toddlers' fine motor development as they squeezed sponges, scrubbed the pumpkins, and used cups to scoop and pour water. They also explored cause and effect as they watched bubbles form and burst between their fingers. The children were given opportunities to investigate textures, practice coordination, and engage in sensory exploration while following their own interests.

We love seeing where the children's curiosity takes us and how a simple discovery can turn into such an exciting learning experience!

We wonder what other adventures our classroom pumpkins will take us on… stay tuned!
