Fall sensory exploration!

  • Program Name: Infant

This October our infants were invited to explore Fall materials and learn about this beautiful chilly season!

With pumpkin guts and chunks, decorative corn, and gourds, the infants used their little fingers and big minds to experience different shapes and textures that belong in the Fall season. By squeezing, poking, scraping, holding, and any other way the children desired, they worked on developing their fine motor skills and sensory motor integration, building their confidence and skill levels.

One child crawled right up to the tuff tray covered in materials and placed herself in front of it. She scrunched up her face and grabbed a gourd that was covered in little bumps. She used her pointer finger to trace along the bumps, looked up and said “Ouuuu!”. Another child picked up a large chunk of pumpkin. He brought the chunk up in front of his face, holding it up with both hands, and stared at it intently while sweeping his eyes over each part, studying the chunk of pumpkin with a curious expression and eyes wide.

Engaging in sensory experiences like this, gives children the opportunity to explore the world with their favourite way: the senses! Activities like this focus on children’s fine motor skills, sensory and early exploration, curiosity, hand-eye coordination, and allow lots of room for growth and development!

Our infant room is looking forward to exploring more seasonal materials as we move into the colder months!
